ATHENS AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

ENGRAVED PAVERS

MURAL

Thanks to the vision of one of our members, (Mrs. Kellie Lindsey) the Southern most exterior wall in the courtyard, parallel with the Museum, graces a beautiful Mural spanning the entire length and width of the neighboring SAFEbuilt building. It was painted by Kimber Thompson who is well-known Marshall artist. The painting is a scene comprised of a downtown Streetscape Circa 1900's. The painting of the Mural began on May 15, 2018, and it was completed in July 2018. Local area students participated in the effort. Funds to paint the mural were raised for over three (3) years.

The idea for the Mural was originated by Mrs. Kellie Lindsey who led the effort to raise the funds required, hired the artist and select what the mural would look like. One unique feature of the Mural is the inclusion of the names of donors who donated $100 or more. The donor level of $100.00 yielded a hidden name within the Mural to be found by the donor. The donor level of $500 yielded a name prominently displayed as a store front, breast plate of a draft horse, or carriage company name. Until the Mural is completed, the artist video taped time lapse video of the progress. The video was uploaded into our Facebook account and will be incorporated into this website and available for viewing. In addition, our professional photographer (Keith Dara) took periodic pictures for posting in Facebook, other social media and this website.

The Mural requires maintenance, such as yearly painting with a clean sealant. This is required for preservation. This annual activity will be a regular part of the Athens High School Community hours program as an opportunity for students to procure mandated community hours for graduation, scholarships and the like. Donations for the materials for this annual event will be accepted. You may donate to the Athens Area Historical Society by check with the memo indicating "Mural Preservation Fund"
